The Indian corporate LNG landscape is becoming more diverse. Previously Petronet was responsible for contracting on behalf of four major Indian state owned energy companies – GAIL, Indian Oil, ONGC and Bharat Petroleum. However, these companies are increasingly seeking to directly import LNG. Meanwhile other state owned companies such as GSPC, in addition to private and foreign companies, have entered or are seeking to enter the Indian market.
The companies come from a variety of sectors such as gas transportation, upstream, refining as well as industrial conglomerates. They are attracted by a market that is open to competition and expected to experience solid growth. However, building future market share will depend on accessing both infrastructure and consumers base who can afford LNG. Different companies have their strengths and weaknesses and as yet no company has a clear competitive advantage in the Indian market.
